Topsail, NC...July 28 - August 3

Hilary, the kids, and I went to Topsail, NC for a week with our friends. The ocean water was the bluest that Hilary and I had seen since our honeymoon in St. Lucia. Hilary even went in the ocean and won the 2nd annual Topsail Boogie Board Shredding contest. She now goes by the name "Hang 10 Hotty" and plans to defend the title next summer.

Thanks to Sarah, Craig, Nicole, Dan, Ian, Kristin, and Stroker for making the week one that we'll remember! It is always great to spend time with our friends.

Jim likes to think this is Alex practicing his golf swing at the beach. He just needs to keep that head down (don't we all)!

Cover girl of the SI swimsuit edition 2027...

Paying no attention to the advice given by her dentist at her recent visit, Riley digs into some chewy fruit snacks on the beach...

Alex doing his best to look cool for all the 3 year old "hotties" on the beach...

As most of you know, Riley NEVER stops talking. Alex saw the shovel and the large beach as his chance to finally get some peace and quiet.

Fortunately for Riley, she was able to talk Alex into burying himself as well.

Riley kicking her way out of the hole.

Alex using his muscle to do the same.

Alex loving every bit of the water (it had to be close to 90 degrees if not warmer).

This is Riley just before being swept under the water by a big wave. Not to worry...she loved every minute of it.

Hmmm...what should I say next?

If I hide in the shade, maybe Riley won't find me!

BFF's!!!!

Posing with their new boogie boards.

Riley testing out her boogie board.

Alex got the hang of it! He is still hurting from Mom "stealing" the boogie boarding championship from his grasp. He insists that if his parents didn't force him to take naps every day, he would have had enough stellar rides to grab the title for himself!

Alex and Riley watching Daddy and Craig catch some waves of their own.

After all the boogie boarding, it was time to lay down!

Alex spending some more time in the ocean.

Alex and Riley working on their breast strokes.

Riley hasn't quite learned the art of the wedgie pick just yet...

Sarah gave Hilary, Nicole, Dan and I the most amazing gift by teaching our kids how to make tasty desserts! If you look closely at Alex's eyes, there are little hearts in them. Sarah is officially Alex's first crush...

Taking a break from the beach and doing some coloring.

Riley certainly loves her brother!

Alex posed with the rest of us after getting done mowing all of that pesky grass off the sand dunes.

Past and future Pitt grads!

Alex, Riley, and their newest friend Ian. They had a good time all week!!

This is the entire group towards the end of the week. Still with smiles on our faces and not much sunburn. Although Craig has a busted toe...but thankfully he was able to limp into the picture.

Alex and Riley love to hug!

Another family shot...

You can see Alex in this picture getting tossed into the air by his best buddy, Craig. Of course, Craig is Sarah's husband...so one of those relationships is doomed for sure!

This is us waiting for our lunch at Sonic on our way to spend the day in Williamsburg, VA. A good way to break up the 10 hour drive home...or so we thought. We had absolutely no idea what was going to happen in about 30 minutes.

This is Alex, Riley, and Hilary sitting in the air conditioned tow truck. We blew a tire in Carrollton, VA about 30 minutes from Williamsburg. Ray the tow truck driver was a nice guy and worked pretty quickly for as hot as it was.

For those of you that would like to know, Jim was taking the pictures and was sweating more than Craig on a golf course as he assisted Ray. Only some of you will know how much sweat that is...but just know that it's A LOT!

We finally reached Williamsburg!!!

Alex couldn't understand why this guy wouldn't confirm nor deny his theory that while disease, famine and continuing attacks of neighboring Algonquians took a tremendous toll on the population at Fort James, there were times when the Powhatan Indian trade may have actually revived the colony with food for copper and iron implements.

Eating dinner on a bench near an 18th century hospital....well...a replica of the hospital anyway. This building was actually built 30 years after our house.

Finishing up dinner.

Riley taking a look at a bull for the first time.

Alex doing the same.

Although this horse does look exactly like a genuine colonial horse, believe me when I tell you, he's just an actor. They sure do a great job making you think you're in the 1700's in Williamsburg!

Please don't feed the actors!!!

It was a loooooooong day! We won't get into our experience in the hotel. Let's just say I wouldn't recommend the Four Points Sheraton in Williamsburg.

It wasn't bad enough not to be able to smile though...I guess it never is...
